Sastamala’s roots reach deep into medieval Finland. Originally known as Vammala, the town was founded as a market place in 1907 and received city status in 1965. Over the decades, neighboring areas such as Karkku and Tyrvää were incorporated, and later Suodenniemi joined in 2007. Finally, in 2009 Vammala merged with the municipalities of Äetsä and Mouhijärvi to form modern Sastamala—with Kiikoinen following in 2013. The region is also renowned for its medieval stone churches, including St. Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää and the church in Karkku dating back to the early 16th century, which reflect a long-standing spiritual and cultural legacy.
